Tactical Urbanism is One Step Closer to Reality for Community Change
Often temporary tactical urbanism projects are the first step to envisioning a more pedestrian-friendly intersection or an activated space with a parklet. Through TURBO, we take ideas from citizens, organizations, and neighborhood groups to see if there is something we can do to elevate the human experience through design.
The 12 South corridor has become a destination for shopping, dining, and strolling. With increased traffic on 12th Ave South, the residential neighborhood around the “destination” has become a thruway to avoid roadblocks and search for parking. The neighbors came to TURBO so we could work together to implement a temporary traffic calming solution. While the solution is temporary, the goal is to influence permanent safety measures. In conjunction with the installation of the traffic circle, TURBO worked with Metro Public Works on a traffic speed study to evaluate the speeds before and after the installation.
